About Our Fraternity
Antioch Shrine is a very old and proud Fraternity. On May 10, 1897, thirty nine Shriners assembled in Dayton, Ohio to petition the Imperial Shrine Council for a dispensation to be called Antioch Shrine. On June 14th, 1898, a charter was granted establishing Antioch Shrine Temple. On July 18th, 1898, the first Divan (governing body) was duly elected and installed. Antioch met in several sites in Dayton over the years, from the Hotel Atlas, Hotel Beckel, Phillips House to the Masonic Temple on North Main Street in 1907. The current site of Antioch was purchased in 1919. The buildings on the property were used until 1954 when plans were finalized to build the current Art Deco/Art Modern structure we use today.

Antioch's Past Imperial Potentates
Charles A. Tad Claypool, 33rd
(2002-2003)

Charles A. Tad Claypool of Beavercreek, Ohio, was elected Jr. Past Imperial Potentate of the Shrine of North America at the Shriners’ 2003 annual International Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 6-10. As Jr. Past Imperial Potentate, he served his first year on the Board of Trustees for Shriners Hospitals for Children. He served as Imperial Potentate of the Shrine of North America, the highest-ranking Shriner in the world in 2002-2003.
Tad is an attorney with the firm of Johnson, Douple, Beyoglides, Leve, Hansen & Claypool in Dayton, Ohio. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, Athens, and his law degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1973.
He has been active in many civic affairs, including serving as president of the Dayton Horse Show Association. The Dayton Horse Show, which contributed more than $2 million to Shriners Hospitals for Children, was an annual event that attracted hundreds of exhibitors and their horses.
He is also a member of the Dayton Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and the American Horse Shows Association.
Raised a Master Mason in 1970, Rock Moriah Lodge #740, Tad is a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason; a member of the York Rite bodies; the Royal Order of Jesters, Dayton Court #10; and various other fraternal bodies.
He was created a Noble of Antioch Temple in 1970 and served as the Temple’s Potentate in 1990.
Tad and his wife, Kay, have two children, Matthew and Aimee.
Charles J. Claypool
(1979-1980)

This was Antioch’s seventieth anniversary but more importantly, this Potentate became Antioch’s first and only Noble to become Imperial Potentate. Chuck
was the leader of all Shrinedom from July 1979 to July 1980 and presided at the 106th Imperial Council Session in Cleveland, Ohio, from 6-11 July 1980. Unfortunately, Antioch and all Shrinedom lost a good friend and Past Imperial Potentate when Imperial Sir Chuck Claypool died on September 11, 1981. We are saddened by the loss of Antioch’s 68th Potentate.
As an Imperial Officer, Chuck was known for negotiating the Lexington Hospital Unit and the Portland Hospital Unit with Universities in those cities. As Imperial Potentate, he dedicated the new Imperial Headquarters building in Tampa, Florida.
Imperial Sir Claypool was born in Holly Springs, West Virginia (population 30), in 1922. Chuck came to Dayton and at age 27 he started his own plumbing and heating business. Later, he developed several other businesses and actively invested in real estate. Chuck was known as a very successful businessman.
Chuck was created a Noble on September 10, 1955, at Antioch’s 120th Ceremonial held at the High School Auditorium in Bellefontaine. He was a member of the Mounted Patrol; chief Ambassador; Membership Chairman for 8 years; President of the Red Fez; a member of Cabiri; and a Past President of Dayton Court #10, Royal Order of Jesters. Raised in Xenia Lodge #49, F&AM; also belonged to Tau Chapter #239, RAM; Reese Council #9, R&SM; Reed Commandery #6, KT; and the Valley of Dayton, AASR.
